Sports Performance

"All the good you do for your body, training, chiropractic, staying hydrated, eating mindfully, ... Nothing you do for your body is going to feel different, from a constitutional perspective, until you see her for acupuncture."

Athletes are a special breed of human. They operate on a different plane than most people. Pain is inconsequential – the drive to push as hard and as far as they can go is stronger than the inner voice saying, “less is more”. Food is first recognized as a source to improve the performance dance that is constantly circulating in their heads, and secondly, to satisfy “comfort” cravings, well earned by grueling workouts. Athletes do not like to hear the words “you need to take a break”, so how does one help such a stubborn breed of humanity? What is it that they require to keep operating in the way they are configured? They need fast recovery and extra nourishment of the muscles, ligaments and joints. With the repetitive stress from impact and specific tendino-muscle use, and lengthy sports’ workouts, imbalances in athletes' physiological constitutions can develop, making recovery slower and more difficult. Fatigue from over-training and painful musculo-skeletal issues become chronic.

Maya Acupuncture and Herbs helps the athlete by clearing pain from injuries (such as stiff tendons, sore ligaments, plantar fasciitis, weak ankles, knee pain, tight hamstrings, piriformis, and Achilles tendons, sore and inflamed back, deep hip and tensor fasciae latae muscular pain, sciatica), providing not only re-hydration but specific nourishment to the systems of the body that are constantly tapped from long-term rigorous sports, and teaching the athlete to anticipate her/his unique possible weaknesses before they happen (be that how to prevent a cold from developing from running in the cold winter air, how to avoid stiffening muscles and ligaments during a tennis match, how to minimize the down-side of asthma, how to figure out what the best foods would be to improve performance, etc.).

Chinese Herbal Medicine and Nutrition

In conjunction with acupuncture, the benefits of Chinese herbal medicine are vast. Swallowed in a tea form or used as an external soak, these herbs not only can be directed to specific areas of the body, i.e. the shoulders, elbows, hands, knees, feet, lower or upper back, forehead or back of head, they can also nourish blood, re-hydrate the body, alleviate pain, warm or cool areas, soften ligaments, alleviate inflammation

Similar to Chinese herbal medicine with respect to the attributes of healing, following a diet of Chinese modern nutrition that is rich in whole foods can change one’s athletic performance markedly. So many athletes are operating at their peak, have highly trained knowledge in western nutrition and supplements, and yet could gain even more strength, endurance, and focus by changing what they eat and drink. Add that awareness to an athlete’s regimen, and what do you have? Good results, less injury, faster recovery time.

Maya Acupuncture and Herbs trains each patient on the attributes of important foods for her/his life. By recognizing what one eats from a medicinal perspective, having the discipline to maintain a specific diet during training, and the desire to feel indomitable in one’s sport is that much easier to attain. To be able to make food choices that create a new edge in an athlete’s performance is nothing less than exciting.
